FAFSA February

Hey Seniors!
So, if you just won the LOTTO, read no further.  Otherwise… Many of you have heard from your colleges and counselors are hearing mostly good news from you every day.  Some of you will hear admissions news in March and April.  Nevertheless, it’s time to focus your attention on PROM.  No!  Not yet!  It’s time for families seeking financial aid to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  This can be done online (www.fafsa.gov) Even if you think your family income is too high to qualify for aid, your family should still consider filling out the form to determine your eligibility for federal and state student grants, work-study, and federal loans.  You can also see what your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) will be using the EFC Calculator.

In his State of the Union address in January, President Obama proposed that colleges and universities cut costs or risk losing out on some federal aid as part of a larger packet of “college affordability” ideas.  In his speech, Obama called for solutions to make college more affordable.  This is good news for current seniors.  (To read the full article see chicagotribune.com January 28th issue.)  Also helpful is collegeboard.org.

Now is the time to contact your college financial aid offices to discuss your particular financial aid/scholarship questions.  Also pick up one of the Local Scholarship Applications in the guidance office.  There are 66 scholarships listed in the packet and they vary greatly.  Try for as many that fit your qualifications and career interests.  They are due February 24th by 3:30 pm.

Check Naviance for even more scholarship listings.  If needed, attend the next financial aid workshop at Glenbard East on Saturday, February 25 from 10:30 am-12:00 pm.

Admittedly, this is not the FUN part of the college admissions process.  But a little effort on your part can make college more affordable.  Good Luck!
